Casa de Katie, Closed

As of January 1st, 2009 Amigos de las Escuelas is no longer funding Casa de Katie.

Lack funds forced us to let the staff go and shut the doors.

Repeated efforts to find $2500 per month to maintain full services proved un-successful.

When school opened again in January, the (ex)community center staff held meetings with teachers and community members giving them notice of the problems and consequences.

All responded with sadness. The teachers especially praised the work we have done with the center as being a force which significantly changed the community. They said that before CK, there was no point in assigning children homework, it would never get done. With the help of CK, that changed and they began to see vast improvements in the children's progress.

Thank you all for your past support.

Rio Bravo, next week

Hola Amigos,

Well, as far as I know there are only a hand full of us going to Mexico next week. Not even enough to justify bringing the Suburban up. If your name is not Jim, Sam, Larry or Nikki and you are going, drop me a note and let me know so I can get you a hotel room.

I suspect the combination of economic crisis and news about violence were the major factors.

We will miss you, and report when we get back.

Rob

Casa de Katie, under New Management

I am proud to announce that as of Feb 17, 6 weeks after the closing of Casa de Katie, members of the community have stepped up and volunteered to run some of the programs at the center.

The center will be open 5 days per week, I will get more details when I go down this week.
